Competition
Process

  • Each team is obliged to attend the IDEERS Conference and present the design concept they used. During the presentation, presenter should introduce the concept and method they utilized for energy dissipation and shake isolation. Referees at NCREE will determine whether if the model is the design of energy dissipation and isolation or not. Afterward, participants should modify their design and the design should be approved by referees by 9AM on the competition day. If a team could not meet the requirements mentioned above, disqualification will be made.
  • Before the retrofit and strengthening starts to be made, the benchmark model has to be weighted as M B and scrutinized under IDEERS referees after construction.
  • After construction of the upgraded model system is finished, it should be sent to the judge for quality certification again. After the total mass M T of the improved model system is weighted and recorded. Each team should install its model onto the shaking table by their own and be responsible for fixing of the mass blocks by using the PVC hot-melt glue. It is not allowed to use the hot-melt glue or add components on the structure for strengthening during the mass blocks mounting period.
  • The target Peak Ground Acceleration which each model should sustain is 1000gal . Shaking table tests will be routed by 400, 800, 850, 900, 950, 1000, 1050, 1100, 1150, and to the maximum testing acceleration 1200gal . Models fail to survive from the earthquake below 800gal are disqualified and can not be ranked in the competition.
  • If the model system is collapsed ( more than half of the columns are broken ) , the model system will be taken as failed.
  • If base isolation system is used, the maximum allowable lateral displacement of the isolated base is 5 cm (which is the margin of the baseboard) . If the displacement exceeds the limit, the model will be considered as “failed”.
