IDEERS
In order to promote earthquake engineering and seismic protection education and encourage students to participate in a creative scientific competition, a program entitled "Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools (IDEERS)" will be held at the TaiwanNationalCenter for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in September 25~28, 2008. This program is jointly organized by NCREE, the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL), the NationalCenter for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), the National Science and TechnologyCenter for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), and the Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research (ANCER). Student teams from Taiwan and all around the world are welcome to take part in this activity.
This program is based on the concept of ¡§Learning from Doing¡¨, and has grown into a creative and innovative competition activity. It also incorporates an user-friendly computation/visualization tool to help high school participants learn about structural mechanics and earthquake engineering through the use of a computer program called GISA3D-IDEERS software developed in NCREE. It allows the user to conveniently construct the analytical models and evaluate the possible seismic performance of the test specimen.
The NCREE has conducted this annual program for seven years and has hosted thousands of high school, undergraduate and graduate students. It has allowed the organizers to introduce, and make demonstrations to, the students about analytical and experiment simulations for earthquake engineering. In addition to the shake table contests, a technical tour will be arranged for all international participants. A one-day conference will be held for graduate teams to introduce and discuss their design with others. The attendees will also have the opportunity to witness various on-going experiments conducted at NCREE. Detailed information can be obtained from the website.
